Abstract

Alonside its main golden bull (haub gulden bull), another charter of privilege of the city of Buda was referred to as a golden bull. The former meant the diploma that King Béla IV issued in 1244 for the hospites of Pest, while the latter, conceded by the same king, already concerned the burghers of Buda and contained economic dispositions. Although the medieval archives of Buda have not survived, the privileges once stored therein can at least partly be reconstructed from the city lawbook and from references scattered throughout the extant charters. Altogether, 25 charters of privilege could be identified from the medieval period. Of these, only the charters of King Béla IV from 1244 and of Ladislaus IV from the year 1287 are known in full text, albeit only from later transcriptions. A charter of Charles have come down to us in mutilated form, while only a part of the charter issued by Ladislaus IV in 1276 has been preserved by another diploma. All that is known from the other charters of privilege are later citations, while the contents of the rest can be reconstructed from references only.
