Abstract
French diplomat, writer and teacher, François Gachot (1901-1986) lived a quarter of a century in Budapest during his long career. The intellectual and literary work he did between 1923 and 1949 in Hungary, then in Germany, in various forms, enriched his life and his relationships. Teaching French language and culture at the College of Fine Arts in Budapest, he met collectors, painters and sculptors (Miklós Borsos, Béla Czóbel, István Farkas, Béni Ferenczy, Ferenc Hatvany, Gyula Hincz etc.), as well as students. He himself became a collector, the Hungarian part of his collection has returned to Hungary during the last 20 years in art auctions. His relationship with one of his students, Ilona Tallós, future painter, is certified by their correspondence kept in the Department of manuscripts of the Literary Museum Petőfi, as well as by the series of illustrations for the book Kakas Ferkó diadala [The triumph of Ferkó Kakas] by Gachot, published by Imre Cserépfalvi in 1942. As his work as a cultural diplomat and qualities as a mediator, his short stories, memoir and poems attesting their love/friendship deserve to be published.
