Abstract
Endre Illyés (1897–1962) was a Reformed pastor, theologian, educator and ethnographer who spent his life strengthening the Calvinist identity. From 1933 to the mid-1940s, he worked as a religious educator in Debrecen. He regularly had his students write essays on their religious experiences. Most of the students recalled the events of a Christian feast. Only about 3 percent of them wrote about an explicit experience of God. Following the author’s arguments in his 2018 book (Vallás – világkép – tudomány /Religion – Worldview – Science/) about the legitimacy of a Christian scientific interpretation framework, he presents the essays that explicitly describe experiences of God in the context of this paradigm. These are also weighed according to the Christian practice of discretio spirituum, i.e., the discernment of spirits to decide which ones can be considered as genuine experiences of God and against which ones doubts arise as to their authenticity, respectively.
