Abstract

Basically, the Reformation in Hungary took place as a spontaneous process, not entirely independent of the current power and political situation, though. The doctrines, cultic practices, and organizations of our churches, now called historic churches, have evolved nearly over one and a half century. One of the elements of this process, on which so far less research has been done, is the history of the development of denominational consciousness. The long-term objective of the research is to describe the history of the development of denominational consciousness. Especially in the first decades of the Reformation, the fact of the schism was not yet fully understood in Hungary either. Therefore, the struggle between the various Protestant movements and the Catholic doctrines did not appear in the participants’ minds as an irreconcilable conflict between two or more actors, but as a search for truth within the universal church. Reverend Imre Ozorai worked in the south-eastern regions of Hungary in the 1530s and 1540s. On the whole, his several-hundred-page writing on the church of Christ, which is one of the first theological works in Hungarian, follows the theology of Luther and Melanchthon, but it also contains numerous elements of thought still connected to the old traditions. The study attempts to read Ozorai’s work as a textual witness to the doubts, uncertainties, and spiritual problems, arising from the disengagement from traditions and the acceptance of new teachings that also appeared among individuals, congregations, and even in the clergy. These all can be considered as the antecedent to the development of denominational consciousness.
