Abstract
The study investigates the scope (size/extension) limits of the student nicknames, used by student communities preserving the traditions of the Academy of Selmec (today: Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia) from the aspects of onomastic. The diachronic analysis is built on data from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The initial hypothesis of the study is that the increase in name range is due to the change in the communication needs of the community using these names and the combination of the naming (categorization) characteristics of the name variety. Therefore, it briefly presents the naming traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries: the origin of traditions, the communities that previously or currently still use these names and naming practice. The following sections point out the problems of categorizing proper name, and seek an answer to the question of how to measure the range of names, how it is possible to use oversized student nicknames as actual names in written and oral communication. And finally, the study draws the conclusion that the student names can extend as long as the special personal name marking structure connected to vulgo or alias designates it in the context.
