Abstract

Unfortunately, the teaching of onomastics is only indirectly taught in the Hungarian school system. In primary and secondary school textbooks, when discussing vocabulary, proper names, pronouns, pronoun behaviour, pronoun fashion. Before using onomastics knowledge in schools, it is worth looking at the role of nomenclature and its relationship with education. In the field of onomastics, only a small number of papers have so far been published on the knowledge of the surnames and first names of name users, and studies are mainly limited to the choice of names and the associations they evoke. The study of students’ knowledge of onomastics was carried out in two types of schools: a four-year grammar school in Hungarian classes (Ivan Krasko Grammar School in Rimaszombat) and a vocational secondary school (Private Vocational Secondary School in Rimaszombat). I was curious about their knowledge of onomastics. Most of the students interviewed had an uncertain, incomplete knowledge of their own name. The results of the survey confirm that high school students have a more in-depth knowledge of their surnames and first names. This is most evident in the origin of their surnames and first names. Girls tended to give more accurate answers about their knowledge of their surname and first name among both high school and vocational school students. My results confirm those of similar studies in the mainland. The promotion of onomastics has recently been the subject of considerable work by name researchers, but unfortunately without the awareness of educators, it is of little value.
