Abstract
The first digital switchover in public education in spring 2020 has fundamentally changed the learning environment for students and teachers. The present, face-to-face learning-teaching process has shifted to digital, online platforms and thus it has changed the factors and strategies of classroom teaching. Based on an interview research, this paper investigates how the digital curriculum has changed first language teachers› perceptions of L1 education, how it has influenced the methods used in synchronous online first language classes and how it has affected learning support as a key development aspect of L1 education. The results of the interview show that first language teachers also favoured teacher-centred methods in the online learning environment but placed more emphasis on supporting personalised learning and on teaching the process of searching online. The results also show that learning support in the online first language classroom can only be effectively implemented in combination with the development of digital competence.
