Abstract

In my study, I examine the relationship between John Hunyadi and Petkó Tallóci, the Ban of Dalmatia-Croatia, between 1448 and 1453 based on relevant Hungarian, Ragusan, and Venetian sources. The history of the Tallóci family is not unfamiliar to Hungarian historiography, and the activities of the four Tallóci brothers have been extensively explored from the rise of the family to the death of the third brother, Frankó, at the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1448. The subsequent period has not been examined by historians because, following the death of Frankó, Petkó, the only surviving member of the Tallóci family, withdrew from Hungarian domestic politics in 1446. However, he could not rest in peace, as both Hunyadi and Stjepan Tomaš, the Bosnian king, as well as the Counts of Celje, laid claim to his territories. The governor, starting from 1446 until Petkó’s death in 1453, made several attempts to acquire half of the banate to extend his direct influence over the region. Hunyadi’s attempts ultimately proved unsuccessful. It was only after the death of Petkó in 1453 that he found an opportunity to obtain the Banate. During this period, he successfully persuaded King Ladislaus the Posthumous of Hungary to appoint his son, László Hunyadi, as the Ban of Dalmatian-Croatian.
