Abstract

This paper examines the activities of the clergy after the First Crusade, ranging from the acquisition of Jerusalem on 15 July 1099 to Balduin I’s coronation on 25 December 1100. I have examined whether the clergy carried out the activities that we have outlined based on previous experience: (1) their activities before, during and after encounters, (2) caring for the poor, (3) mediating conflicts within the camp and (4) dealing with moral crises. Their military actions were fully incorporated into the Kingdom of Jerusalem’s war rites, and some practices were even adopted in the West. Providing for the poor was consistently prioritised in the clergy’s activities, with a focus on almsgiving. The significance of maintaining army unity was widely recognised and became a key focus for subsequent legates. However, this was not always successfully achieved, as demonstrated in the shortcomings of the Bishop of Albara and the patriarchal office of Daibert. Daibert encountered disputes with Godfrey of Bouillon and later with his successor Baldwin over the ownership of Jerusalem and Jaffa. Eventually, Daibert recognized the impracticality of his plan, which presumably mirrored the ideas of Pope Urban II, and made peace with Baldwin, eventually crowning him as king.
