Abstract
As recently male and female roles have been strongly reconsidered it might be interesting to review the image of women in the Hungarian language. In this essay both newly introduced, everyday used and archaic, out-of-date expressions have been studied. To the image of woman fertility and motherhood are linked. Besides external features also internal qualities are present in phraseology. Mostly negative attributes, often overstated, overdrawn. A woman can be pretty or ugly, thin or plump. She likes talking, gossiping, secrets are not safe with her. She is often lazy, evil, furious and sometimes labile. However she can also be a good wife supporting her husband.
