Abstract
The present paper examines shortly the difficulties of translating texts of musical genres such as songs, musicals and especially operas, in particular regarding singable translations including the inevitable restrictions accompanying this type of translation. Despite of these enormous challenges that make in every aspect true singable translations unachievable or nearly impossible is one of the most popular operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Die Zauberflöte performed – not only in Hungary – even today in translation, sung in the native language of the respective country. The Magic Flute was translated from German into Hungarian by several translators throughout its history of 230 years now, including famous poets among others. This paper provides a brief overview of these translations and the translators throughout the centuries.
