Abstract
In May 2018, together with a statistician, I have conducted an online survey to learn how the respondent literary translators perceive their own social status (social ranking or prestige) and the position of their profession in Hungarian society, what they think of their living standards and fees, whether they regard literary translation as an art, what skills, competences and knowledge they consider essential for such a work, et cetera. A thorough statistical analysis has been done to find correlations, but even the preliminary findings seem to be fascinating and worth publishing. The paper briefly describes the findings of the survey, displays a few tables and diagrams of the answers to certain questions and attempts to come up with explanations for several facts and/or trends.
