Abstract

The author of this study examines the solution attempts of the Hungarian Reformed Church in a very interesting, but at the same time, crisis-filled period. In the course of these experiments, special emphasis was placed on inner mission. It became apparent, however, that in addition to the very effective operation of the inner mission in some places, various Free Church endeavours also became more and more prominent. The focus of the study is the ministry of József Szalay, a Reformed pastor from Nagybecskerek, who, based on the sources available, did not only use the methods of inner mission with excellent results, but he was also in contact with the leaders and members of some Free Church communities. The main questions are: in which areas can the inf luence of these teachings be demonstrated in the case of Szalay; where was the red line that he was no longer willing to cross; in what sense and to what extent was he loyal to the Reformed Church; what can be said about the accusations brought against him and to what extent can he be considered one of the early forerunners of ecumenical idealism in Hungary?
