Abstract

The ideology that came into force after 1945 distorted the historically consolidated framework of religious life on a radical scale. Churches were deprived of their traditional social functions, their economic foundations were liquidated and their public law status was also transformed. The big structural changes naturally affected the opportunities for pastoral care. The space of church life shrank to an extreme extent, the sovereignty of the pastoral service ceased to exist. The politically oriented selection, the depressing administration and the difficulties of making a living increased the pressure on the clergy, which contributed to the loosening of the spiritual relationship with the faithful and the weakening of trust in church government officials. Of course, there were many other causes of the general atrophy of religious life, which occurred everywhere after 1956, although with some fluctuations: we can mention here the intensified social mobilization processes, which involved the sundering of traditional social and cultural networks, but the spread of mass culture and the accelerating technical development also strengthened these tendencies. However, the state was able to catalyse the process, which through the tools of power techniques described in the study, also took place spontaneously in Western societies extremely effectively.
