Abstract

This paper briefly describes the Hungarian situation with regard to Translation Studies, and justifies the subject, the emergence and trends of Translation Studies as an independent discipline (1976-2000). It then outlines the steps toward its institutionalisation. It names the most important personages in Translation Studies at the end of the 20th century, and gives a compendium of their views and contributions. It mentions key issues and a famous case so as to demonstrate why the field of examination cannot be taken for granted, and ends with the scholarly hopes and expectations before the turn of the millennium.
