Abstract

The cultural autonomy of Croatians living in Hungary makes it possible to use the Croatian language starting from preschool until the end of higher education. The aim of this study is to determine the language competency of students in Hungarian-Croatian bilingual high schools. Since currently there is no uniform competency test for languages of nationalities, I am compiling the data of an exploratory research I carried out in 2018 with the data of its repeated and expanded version in 2023. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, we can create an image of high school students’ native and foreign language competencies, their degree of bilingualism, and their linguistic self-evaluation. The questionnaire consists of four sections. The first part asked about the sociological variables of the anonymous respondent, the definition of their mother tongue, and data about their parents. The second section followed the dominance of different languages in specific language use arenas, examining the language choice of students and parents both inside and outside the family, while the third part required an assessment of the respondents’ own language skills.
