Abstract

Catholic church history calls the political fight a „Hungarian culture-fight” which took place between conservative and liberal forces and ended up with the victory of liberalism and the initiation of the bill of ecclesiastical policy. The most important laws included the introduction of the state birth registration, the reception of Israelite religion, the regulation of mixed marriages in between the regulation of the religion and education of the children born in these families. These laws infringed upon the rights of the Catholic church that’s why mainly the Catholic church history dealt with the elaboration of the topic. The study of historian János Rada looks at the activity of the Reformed bishop Gábor Pap which helps to describe the relation between the state and the Reformed church at the beginning of the 1890s. Gábor Pap (1827–1895) a Reformed priest from Komárom, the Bishop of the Transdanubian Reformed Church District (1874–1895) as the hearty supporter of liberalism adapted himself to the liberal policy of the government and supported its goals. He also supported the reforms of the prime minister in every field as a member of the parliament, as well. Pap’s letters and episcopal reports show that this very fierce culture-fight had a strongly destructive effect on the relation between Catholics and Protestants. As a liberal and a Hungarian patriot, Gábor Pap abstained from stirring up hatred in religious affairs, so he spoke very carefully in his public speeches after 1892.
