Abstract

As a result of the activities of Czech and Moravian preachers who fled after the Battle of White Mountain, many cultural elements became established, blended, and adapted to local cultural traditions in Lower and Upper Hungary. These include the printing of Biblical Czech language funeral sermons. With one sole exception, every Czech funeral sermon published between 1637 and 1711 was printed at the printing press established by the refugees in Trenčín and then transferred to Žilina. The authors of the funeral sermons, both local and refugee preachers, pursued their higher education at the most important German universities, where they came to know the innovations in rhetoric and homiletics. They were thus influenced by the major changes in homiletics that had originated at the University of Marburg. In the middle third of the sixteenth century, Andreas Gerardus Hyperius (1511 – 1564) developed a theory of homiletics to replace classical antiquity’s view of the rhetorical effect functions. He identified five genres for the use of homiletics, the genus didascalicum (presentation of Christian doctrines), the genus redargutivum (refutation of erroneous views), the genus institutivum (exhortation to conduct), the genus correctorium (discouragement against conduct to be avoided) and the genus consolatorium (consolation in hardships). The influence of the homiletical theory of Hyperius can be identified in the Biblical Czech language funeral sermons. In my study, using a few examples, I aim to illustrate the use of this homiletical theory and its impact on the audience.
