Abstract

The Széchy family of Rimaszécs owned estates in Gömör and Abaúj counties at the beginning of the early modern age, and belonged to the „bene possessionati”, the wealthy middle-owner stratum of the nobility. The rise of the family began in the last third of the 16th century and was largely due to Tamás Széchy, born around 1555. It is a remarkable model of career history, taking advantage of the mobility opportunities that characterised early modern society. From his status as a landowner in Gömör County, he rose to almost the highest public dignity in nearly half a century. Thanks to Tamás Széchy, the family was integrated into the political and economic elite of the Kingdom of Hungary by the beginning of the 17th century. His rise to power is a good example of the process of the establishment of the hereditary aristocracy that was taking shape in that period. The study analyses the extent to which the size and geographical location of the estates of Tamás Széchy, who played a role in the rise of the family, influenced the individual success of his family. When and, in what form he acquired these estates, to what extent his prestige increased, and how this interacted with his current official and military role and his relationship with the Habsburg dynasty. In the period of the emergence of hereditary aristocracy, the question of why we do not know of any formal elevation of his rank cannot be ignored.
