Abstract
The pinnacle of a politician’s political career is usually seen as the position of head of state or head of government. Iuliu Maniu was prime minister of Romania three times between 1928 and 1933, yet both Hungarian and Romanian historical memory regard him as the architect of the unification of Transylvania with Romania, and his role as prime minister receives only secondary attention. The paper focuses on his years as prime minister and shows what the relationship between him and the Hungarians was like at that time. It is conventional knowledge about Maniu that he strongly separated his private life and politics. I therefore see it appropriate to discuss separately Maniu’s private and political relations with the Hungarians. His relationship with Hungarian individuals and with Hungarians as a community must also be distinguished. These two distinctions serve as the organizing principle of the paper. Finally, the paper also discusses Maniu’s role in issues (e.g., the optants case) that took place before a wider international forum.
