Abstract
T he article revisits a debate by going back to the beginnings of the liturgical movement and confronting protagonists of Monastic and Ignatian spirituality in their understanding of the relationship between liturgy and spirituality. The starting point for the controversy, mainly between Benedictines and Jesuits, was the book La liturgie catholique (1913) by Maurice Festugière, OSB. The disagreement was based on two different approaches to religious and spiritual experience (an ancient-medieval and a modern one). The former focused on the objective communal-ritual celebration of mystery, the latter on the subjective-personal relationship with God. A study by Romano Guardini in 1921 opened up new perspectives in the debate, and it also anticipated the vision of Sacrosanctum Concilium on the relationship between liturgy, personal spirituality and devotional practices (SC 10-13).
