Abstract

The essay examines the management of the Munkács and Máramaros estates of Anne de Foix-Candale, Queen Consort of Hungary (1502-1506), based on the diplomas issued by her. Queen Anne as wife of Ulászló II, King of Hungary, played a significant role in the life and foreign policy of the Hungarian royal court, while the estates held by her were important both from an economic and strategic viewpoint. The significance of these territories, especially the manors of Munkács and Máramaros, were key with respect to the revenues and political manoeuvring space of the queen. The aim of the paper is to show how these estates contributed to the economic stability and consolidation of Anne’s rule. The examination covers the development of estate management and the income drawn from them, with particular attention to the role of salt mining in Máramaros, which provided significant revenue for queen. The acquisition of Munkács was also of key importance, due not just to its strategic role, but also its significance in food supply. The survey makes it clear that the Máramaros salt revenue and the strategic location of Munkács both formed the basis of the queen’s financial resources and political influence.
