Abstract

The article describes the decipherment possibilities and a suggested reading of the in-scription on a dwarf column of the former Saint George Abbey church of the Syrmian village of Dombó (today: Rakovac, Serbia). The recently identified Dombó inscription is probably an early Székely-Hungarian Rovash script relic from the Árpádian age, and as such an original (not translation-based) monument of Old Hungarian. It is worth mentioning that the inscription can be interpreted as a piece of quasi-spoken-language data in a written form: a trace of bantering between the stonemasons working on the construction of the church. For archaeological reasons, the inscription cannot be earlier than the end of the 11th century, and due to the marking of the /β/ sound (which later disappeared from Hungarian), it is probably not later than the beginning of the 12th century. The importance of the Dombó inscription is given by the fact that few rovash inscriptions are known from the early Árpád-era. | A szerémségi Dombón (ma Rakovac, Szerbia) található hajdani Szent György apátság templomából való az a törpepillér, amelyen rovásfelirat látható. A cikk ismerteti a megfejtési lehetőségeket és a felirat javasolt olvasatát. Az újonnan azonosított dombói felirat a székely-magyar rovás emléke az Árpád-korból, és mint ilyen, az ómagyar nyelv eredeti (nem fordításból származó) emléke. Említésre méltó sajátossága a feliratnak, hogy írott formában beszélt nyelvi adatként értelmezhető: a templom építésén dolgozó egyik kőfaragó évődése a társával. Régészeti okokból a felirat nem korábbi, mint a 11. század vége, a magyarból később eltűnt /β/ hang jelölése miatt valószínűleg nem későbbi, mint a 12. század eleje.
