Abstract

A Budapesti Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem Külkereskedelmi Kar Nemzetközi Üzleti Szaknyelvek Tanszék munkatársaiként a 2022/23-as tanév II. félévében felmérést végeztünk angol nyelvet tanuló hallgatóink körében azok grammatikai kompetenciájával kapcsolatban. A vizsgálat oka azon megfigyelésünk volt, hogy hallgatóink nyelvtani tudása egyre kevésbé szisztematikus, elmarad a szókincs ismeretéhez képest, alacsony szintje a kommunikatív kompetenciára is negatív hatással van. Vizsgálatunk során több mint 200 hallgatót kerestünk meg kérdőívünkkel, amelynek első része a hallgatók nyelvtani kompetenciával kapcsolatos attitűdjét és önértékelését mérte fel, második részében pedig mondattranszformációs feladatok segítségével vizsgáltuk B2 szinten elvárható nyelvtani szerkezetek ismeretét. Mintánkba, amely nem reprezentatív, 50 olyan hallgató került, aki már rendelkezett C1 szintű komplex nyelvvizsgával. Megállapítottuk, hogy az ő esetükben is megfigyelhetők jelentős grammatikai hiányosságok. Vizsgálatunkat ezért a 2024/25-ös tanév I. félévében megismételtük, ekkor már csak 50 olyan hallgatóval, aki bevallása szerint C1 szintű komplex nyelvvizsgával rendelkezett. Eredményeink az első vizsgálatéhoz hasonlóak voltak. Véleményünk szerint a szisztematikus nyelvtani ismeretek gyakori hiányát figyelembe kell vennünk a nyelvvizsgával belépő hallgatók számára készülő tantervek, tanmenetek készítésekor. | As members of Budapest Business School Faculty of International Management and Business, Department of Languages for International Business, in the 2nd semester of the 2022/23 academic year, we conducted a survey among our Business English students with the aim of assessing their grammatical competence. The investigation was motivated by the observation that our students’ grammar knowledge is less and less systematic, it lags behind their knowledge of vocabulary, and its low level considerably affects their communicative competence. We contacted more than 200 students with our questionnaire, the first part of which enquired about the students’ general attitude regarding grammatical competence, whereas the second part examined the respondents’ familiarity with some frequently used B2-level grammatical structures. Our sample, which is not representative, included 50 students who had already passed C1-level complex language exams. We found that significant grammatical deficiencies could be observed in their case as well, so we decided to repeat our survey in the 1st semester of the 2024/25 academic year with 50 students holding C1 level complex language exam certificates. The findings of this second survey were similar to the first one. We believe that the frequent lack of systematic grammar knowledge should be taken into account when designing our curricula and courses.
