Abstract

This study offers a close examination of Kelemen Mikes’s Letters from Turkey through three focal points: the role of exile and the linguistic-humorous features of Mikes’s prose; the generic classification and literary influence of the Letters on Hungarian prose; and the character of Mikes’s “aunt”, a central figure in the epistolary fiction. The paper contrasts the traditional image of Mikes – as shaped by Romanticism and later Nyugat authors – with more recent literary criticism, highlighting how Mikes was far more politically aware and critical than previously assumed.
