Abstract
The poet-linguist Dávid Baróti Szabó, a former Jesuit monk who later became a secular priest, wrote hundreds of poems over his long life. Although little was known about the fate of his manuscript collection, recent discoveries of his manu-scripts in various genres have come to light in preparation for publication. His sermons had not been documented in the literature because their existence was previously unknown. According to his biography, Baróti Szabó served as a priest-teacher in various monasteries across the country until the Jesuit order was dis-solved in 1773. The Esztergom Cathedral Library has preserved manuscripts of 24 Latin and 19 Hungarian ecclesiastical sermons by Baróti Szabó. In my lecture, I will present his sermons written in Hungarian. These manuscripts are undated, but it is likely that they were composed before 1773. They reveal the young priest-teach-er’s skill in prose writing.
