Abstract

During the 16th and 17th centuries the Nádasdy and Thurzó families held considerable influence among Protestant supporters in the Hungarian Kingdom. Their involvement is supported by endorsements, speeches aimed at family members, as well as related to funerals and weddings. This study examines two sets of funeral publications that have similar aspects and are connected to pre-established, deliberately constructed frameworks for family representation. I analyse three funeral orations composed in 1604, 1616, and 1618, with regards to their emphasis on honouring the deceased and how this relates to the prevailing religious and political narratives of the time.
