Abstract

Orczy Lőrinc mint szerző a 18. század kiemelkedő, de a nyomtatott irodalmi nyilvánosságtól az irodalom alacsony társadalmi megítélése és a műveit elutasító kritikai észrevételek miatt ódzkodó, rejtőzködésre hajló költője volt, aki csakis szűk körben kívánt poétaként ismertté válni. Fiatalabb pályatársai azonban vagy baráti jóindulatból, mint Barcsay Ábrahám, vagy azért, hogy művelődési programjuk előképét mutassák fel benne, mint Bessenyei György, a nyilvánosság felé terelték. Ebben a legtöbb eredményt Révai Miklósnak sikerült felmutatnia. Orczy a nyomtatott nyilvánosság vállalása ellenére sem hagyta a piarista szerzetesnek, hogy feltüntesse nevét kötetei címlapján. A kötetek belsejében viszont számos olyan utalást találhatunk, melyek felfedik a szerző kilétét. Ennek oka az lehetett, hogy a báró a mű létrehozásában csakis közreműködő társként tudta elfogadni magát, aki kiadójával együtt osztozik a szerzői felelősségen. This paper examines what role the use of names played in the author’s careerbuilding strategy in the 18ᵗʰ century Hungarian literature. Baron Lőrinc Orczy, who was an aristocrat, a general and a talented poet of the era, avoided publishing his literary works under his own name. He feared that any public critical approach to his poetry would rather endanger than foster his well-earned social status and that is why he refused to allow his friends to publish his poems with his own name on the title page. In contrast with Orczy’s considerations, younger poets such as Ábrahám Barcsay, György Bessenyei and Miklós Révai thought that literary publicity and the use of the author’s real name on his publications were important to literary career-building, institutionalization of literature, and the Language Reform. Especially Révai considered the use of pen-name important as he was a low-born Piarist father. Both authorial concepts were manifested in Orczy’s volumes. Orczy’s poems had been published without his name by Révai, while the Piarist father presented himself as the editor and publisher of the volumes. Even so, we can find references to Orczy’s authorship in these volumes. It can be understood as a move of Orczy to share some of the author’s responsibility with the editor
