Abstract
The paper examines Jodocus Badius Ascensius’ commentary on the Aeneid, published in 1507. It analyzes the strategies, practices, and methods Badius employed to interpret the text, as well as his use of ancient and early modern exegetical works. The paper also explores how Badius’ variorum-commentary fits into the Renaissance tradition of commentaries, what are the specific features of his commentarius familiaris, and its pedagogical function. Through close reading and comparative analysis, the paper examines Badius’ relationship to his predecessors and contemporaries and his contribution to the interpretive tradition of the Aeneid.
