Abstract

In the preface of the paper the authors shortly present the modern speech producing methods with one chip. They deal with the speech synthesizer with fixed dictionary, then with that group of speec synthesizers with which free dictionary synthesizing systems can be produced (e.g. SC 01 phoneme synthesizer of VOTRAX firm, the speech synthesizer of TMS 5200 type working with LPC method of Texas Instruments firm, and MEA 8000 formant synthesizer made by Philips). The subject of the paper is to outline of the MEAREB speech synthesizing developing system made by the authors. First of all they present the parameters (TM, A M ,PI,FI, B1, F2, B2, F3, B3, B4) which direct the MEA 8000 speech synthesizer. The hardware of the developing system is: a personal computer of Commodore 64 type, a monitor, a floppy disk unit of 1541 type, and a printer. The authors interfaced the circuit card containing the MEA 8000 speech synthesizer to the Commodore 64 through the external port of the computer. The program named REBECCA constitutes the software of the MEAREB developing system, which was written in BASIC language complemented with subroutines of machine code. In the interest of the easy operation of the program REBECCA works in a so-called menu system. The user can direct the operation of the program with 10 so-called user commands. The certain commands can be activized by a stroke of a number. The program to the highest degree takes advantage of graphic and other possibilities afforded by Commodore 64 computer. The parameters of 256 frames can be manipulated in the course of a single run with REBECCA program. We can refer to the certain speech frames with serial numbers. The 10 user commands as follows: 0) Any parameter of one of the 256 frames can be written in and changed by the input, modifying commands; 1 ) Writing out of the parameter onto the screen (the parameters of 15 frames can be written out to the 15 upper lines of the screen); 2) The sounding of the frames (one or more frames can be sounded); 3) Floppy disk manipulating command with which the frame loading can be moved between the central memory and the floppy disk; 4, 5) Input/output commands of hexadecimal type; 6) We set the parameters of 256 frames in memory to the basic value with this command; 7) After the definition of frame series we can refer to a series of frames with a common identifier; 8) The printing of the parameters of the frames; 9) The termination of the operation of the program. With the MEAREB system unfolded in the paper the user obtains such an effective means with which the frame stock necessary to producing a given artificial speech can quickly and easily be determined. The MEAREB system can also be used in teaching.
