Abstract

The Working Committee on Applied Linguistics (W1) operating within the Committee on Linguistics of Section I of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) was founded in 1980 by Ferenc Papp, a renowned Hungarian linguist. This study aims to explore and present developments in the history of the Working Committee between 1999 and 2025. However, a monographic reconstruction of this period encountered methodological limitations. During this era, professional communication shifted predominantly to digital channels, resulting in a physical archive limited to the most important documents. Furthermore, annual committee reports are far less detailed than in previous periods. This study presents key data from the academic terms that have occurred during this period, including information on Chairs and Secretaries (see Appendix 1) and significant tasks and achievements (see Appendices 2 and 3). This study presents a comprehensive overview of the officers of the Working Committee over the past quarter-century (1999‒2025). It includes a detailed list of the Chairs and Secretaries, their respective terms of office, and their areas of expertise. Additionally, it provides a concise analysis of the direction and notable events that are characteristic of each academic term. For the past twenty years, the Working Committee on Applied Linguistics has concentrated its efforts primarily on supporting the next generation of scholars. The series of Conferences on Applied Linguistics for PhD Students was inaugurated in 2007. From the event’s inception, its organizational framework was established through the collaboration of the Working Committee on Applied Linguistics and the Institute of Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (presently known as the ELTE Research Center for Linguistics). The publication process for papers can be divided into two main phases. During the initial period (between 2007 and 2021), the written versions of the presented papers were published in the form of peer-reviewed books. Beginning in 2022, the publication strategy underwent a thorough revision. Submitted papers are now published in a special issue of Hungarian Journal of Applied Linguistics (W2), following a rigorous double-blind peer-review process. The Working Committee is also responsible for overseeing the Hungarian Journal of Applied Linguistics (W2) and two Facebook pages (W3 and W4), as well as maintaining contact with other organizations. The Working Committee aligns with the Academy’s strategic objectives. It promotes the growth of applied linguistics in Hungary by connecting researchers and supporting the training of the next generation of applied linguists. The Working Committee also integrates young researchers into the global academic community. During the present term, we have transitioned to organizing online doctoral conferences and updated conference materials like registration forms, information sheets, deadlines, and review forms. The language of the conferences has evolved; presentations were primarily in Hungarian, but now English-language presentations account for approximately two-thirds of the total. This year, we prepared an information sheet on data protection, research ethics, and responsible use of AI. While the online format encourages student participation, it nevertheless reduces face-to-face interaction and requires higher coordination effort by the Working Committee.
