Abstract

The contribution aims to study in detail the ancient Latin grammarians' texts related to errors in vowel quantity among the categories of barbarisms. The goal is to demonstrate that the examples that seem to contradict the Romance vowel quantity development do not attest to unexpected changes in the contemporary language. Rather, these illustrative forms indicate the continuation of a tradition regarding the discussion of barbarisms, with its own specific rules. When selecting examples to explain a barbarism, grammarians took into account many aspects, and actual linguistic processes were only one of them.
