Abstract
This paper aims to provide a preliminary exploration of the state of the gender confusions in the legal charter material of the Chartae Latinae Antiquiores from the vicinity of St Gall and to describe the primary areas that should be investigated more thoroughly in the future. To achieve this the question of the genus alternans is investigated and comparative evidence is used to support the preliminary observations regarding this gender. Furthermore, a selection of sociolinguistic features of the charters is also used to better understand the gender system of these charters.
