Abstract

The study, based on data from six volumes of prayers written by Kata Wesselényi from Hadad, follows the way the author prepared herself for the printed publicity. Her manuscripts, which include paratexts, such as title pages, biblical quotations, dedication letters, and indexes, imitate the image and structure of a printed publication. A closer examination of the volumes uncovers the author’s intentions concerning the printing of the volumes. By publishing her works, Kata Wesselényi aimed, on the one hand, to educate and set an example for society, and, on the other hand, to ensure the survival of her name. However, she ultimately failed to achieve this. Her failure can be attributed to the absence of both a supportive family and an educated clergyman, such as Péter Bod, and the political climate of the time, which was also unfriendly toward Reformed book publishing.
