Abstract

This paper surveys the princely meetings held between 1044 and 1341 with the participation of Hungarian rulers. An analysis of the sample of 73 cases reveals not only the recurring protocol elements but also the fundamental changes that began in the last decade of the 13th century and reshaped the framework of this highest forum for conflict resolution in the Central European region (Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland) by the 14th century. This transformation is reflected both in the growing number of meetings and in their changing locations: the tension-filled border meetings between rulers of equal rank were replaced by representative events with a family atmosphere held in the region’s newly emerging princely residences, or by substantive negotiations organized in major border towns, which contributed to the peculiar stability of Central Europe in the 14th century.
