Abstract

The attitude of Dean Imre Szabó of Budapest to the Jewish question is still waiting to be processed. However, some moments show that his activity in rescuing Jews in 1944 was not without precedent. Already in the spring of 1944, the Dean faced the consequences of disenfranchising government measures in his own congregation, which affected his congregation members and elders of Jewish origin. Having personally faced the reality of deportations that began in the spring of 1944, and having accepted the possible risks as well, he openly spoke out against deportations at the church assembly. At the end of October 1944, after the Arrow Cross takeover, he voiced his opposition in a newspaper article, and then saved children of Jewish origin in the Julianna school building behind his Reformed church in Fasor. He helped other Jewish families as well as Polish, Dutch and French prisoners of war. Yad Vashem honoured him, his wife (posthumous) and their daughter, Éva with the “Righteous Among the Nations” medal in 2003.
