Abstract
The second half of the 19th century saw the increasing professionalization of historical writings, although this process was anything but continuous and total. In the debates between Hungarian and Austrian historical writings about the Pragmatica Sanctio, we see scholars of public law, politicans and jurists alongside professional historians citing and debating each other’s work. In my study I focus my attention on professional historians like Henrik Marczali, Ferenc Eckhart, Viktor Bibl, Alfons Dopsch, but I also introduce lesser known figures like Laura Polányi, who was a student of Marczali and dealt with the subject of economic policy under King Charles the III. I intend to discuss their views on Pragmatica Sanctio, their interactions and debates with legal historians and scholars of public law (mainly with István Csekey), and I will discuss the historical writing of Austrian historian Gustav Turba, whose writings were often debated in the Hungarian historical discourse.
