Abstract
Királyhelmec was the most important town and natural centre of the Bodrogköz already in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, however, there were several changes in the town’s land tenure, economic and religious structure that strongly influenced its society and development. The social stratification and material situation of the population can be reconstructed on the basis of the exceptionally good resources available. The various types of 18th century census allow us to precisely delineate the different status groups of serfs, nobles and clergy. The tax registers provide a picture of the burdens of the serfs in the changing town.
