Abstract

In the present research, we focus on the education of girls born to aristocratic families, and we are interested in how their education was provided from the second half of the 19th century onwards. We will focus on the content and the place of education: the family and the school. In the latter context, we will focus on the Notre Dame de Sion and Sacré Coeur girls’ educational establishments in Budapest. Our sources were both official school documents and memoirs. We used the methods of documentary analysis and narrative text analysis, as well as descriptive statistical analysis. Our results show that while before the First World War, girls of the nobility were typically educated at home in Hungary, focusing on foreign languages and humanities, afterwards the girls’ educational level increased: they were private or regular pupils, but they pursued secondary education, initially at so-called civic school or at upper secondary school for girls, later more at high school, and some even continued their studies at academies or universities. Their aversion to public schooling therefore disappeared and their education became institutionalised. A few institutions – mainly in Budapest – were considered suitable places of study. These also offered the possibility of a kind of social segregation.
