Abstract

This paper focuses on the lexical features of the Belarusian Tatar Kitab written in Arabic script. As a subject of investigation, the Tatar Kitab was rewritten in the mid-19th century by Ibrahim Hasyanevich. A copy of the manuscript is kept in the National Library of Belarus. The main part of the text contains the Ayat-ul-Kursi of Surah Al-Baqarah from the Quran. The text contains a mixture of Arabic language and Belarusian dialect with individual elements of the Polish and Church Slavonic languages. The paper analyses the synthesis of dialect, especially the use of vocabulary and design features from the Arabic text in conjunction with the Slavonic text. Selected lexical examples demonstrate the influence of marginal Polish dialects.
