Abstract
A prehistoric waste-pit was discovered in 1961 at the Somogyvár Castle Park site and the finds canabe classified as belonging to the Lengyeli-Culture. (See Table No. I.) In addition to exhibiting these finds, special attention was turned towards the significance of of a fragmental clay statue of a hog and supposition was advanced as to its one-time function and connection. This cultic-type object, together with other similar animal presentments, can probably be connected to the cult of fertility in the developed neolithic age. The search for the origin of the role of such presentments should be directed towards ritual practice where the essence of magical fertility ceremonies was to sacrifice the depicted animal (cattle, hog sheep). Finds in sacrifical pits seem to confirm this supposition. It is also presumed these idols played a rose in the cult of antropomorphic god-shaped forms which depicted fertility in the developed neolitic age and during the course of the above-mentioned ritual practices these idols could have been an integral part of such ceremonies. The presence of intact idols inside houses and grain pits were attributed with beneficial effects. Broken and damaged idols were probably replaced. It is higly improbable that in addition to the idolcentred religion the presence of animal idols would point to an independent animal cult connected to totemistic procedures.
