Abstract

Fényes Elek a magyar statisztika kiemelkedő személyisége volt a 19. század első felének nagy reformnemzedékének tagjaként. Munkásságára jelentős mértékben hatottak a kor kiemelkedő történelmi eseményei, nemzedékének kiváló tudományos és közéleti szereplői. Ifjúkorában magával ragadta a reformkor szele, a forradalom és szabadságharc idejére elérte tudományos és közéleti pályafutásának csúcsát. A magyar polgári átalakulás ideológiája és a haladó ellenzékiség kialakulásának évtizedeiben közvetlen közelről, a pozsonyi országgyűlésben figyelhette meg, hogy az ország legjobb elméi sem rendelkeznek országuk valós, ténybeli állapotának ismeretéről, ezért elhatározta, hogy megpróbál célzott adatgyűjtésekbe kezdeni, amelyek eredményeképpen sikerül olyan országleírást produkálnia, amely valós tájékoztatást nyújt Magyarország akkori állapotáról. Jelen tanulmány Fényes Elek sokoldalú munkásságának erről az oldaláról kíván rövid tájékoztatást adni. | Elek Fényes was a prominent figure in Hungarian statistics, a member of the great reformist generation of the first half of the 19th century, whose work was greatly influenced by the outstanding historical events of the time, and by the distinguished scientific and public figures of his generation. The young Elek Fényes, who reached the peak of his academic and public career during the Revolution and the War of Independence, was caught up in the air of the reform era. In the decades of the ideology of Hungarian bourgeois transformation and the emergence of progressive oppositionism, Elek Fényes observed at close quarters in the Parliament in Pozsony (name of today’s slovak: Bratislava) that even the best minds in the country had no real, factual knowledge of the state of their country, and he decided to attempt targeted data collection, which would result in a country profile that would provide real information about the state of Hungary at the time. The present paper attempts to give a brief account of this aspect of Elek Fényes' multifaceted work.
