Abstract
Given the lack of consensus in the literature regarding the impact of problem-based learning on students’ learning outcomes, we aimed to identify and understand the possible underlying factors that may contribute to the effectiveness of problem-based learning. To this end, we designed a series of lessons using a problem-based approach supplemented by heuristic strategies to investigate these factors. Two-cycle action research was implemented to explore lower secondary students’ learning outcomes affected by problembased learning and the purposeful use of heuristic strategies. We found that the combination of problem-based learning and the purposeful use of heuristic strategies positively impacts students’ learning outcomes, and we explored this effect from both algebraic and geometric perspectives.
