Abstract
This paper analyses the categories of homogenous (multiplicative) and heterogenous (additive) plural, found in Hungarian, as grammatical meanings and discusses their typical features. Important semantic properties distinguishing the two are pointed out, e.g. group reference, the role of focal referent, the asymmetry of conjoined entities or the necessity of spatial or conceptual coherence. An analysis of aspects of the meaning of heterogenous plural (which lexemes are amenable to it, what the relation is between the members of the group denoted by the heterogenous plural) proves that preferences within the set of nouns capable of forming heterogenous plural meanings is closely correlated with Smith and Stark’s Animacy Hierarchy. The distinction between animate vs. inanimate entities can have important grammatical (morphological and syntactic) consequences: their position within the hierarchy influences not only definiteness, case marking, word order etc. but also, apparently, the possibility of forming heterogenous plurals and associative meanings.
