Abstract
László Beke lives on in the artistic and art historical public consciousness as a studious observer and documenter of the contemporary art scene, and also as one of its active shapers – right from the start of his career at the end of the 1960s. For the most part, it is only the substantially smaller camp of those dealing with the Middle Ages who are aware that Beke also made significant contributions to research into medieval Hungary. For example, he actively participated in the work for the anthology of Hungarian-language translations, complete with explanations, of the main written sources of European medieval art, edited by Ernő Marosi. This volume also included the tombstone inscriptions of a few master builders; following an enumeration of these and a few other examples and a presentation of their depictions, the study deals with depictions and tomb memorials of architects from nineteenth- and twentieth-century Hungary, architectural inscriptions found on buildings, and a few bas-relief depictions of buildings that can be seen on residential blocks in Hungary. The latter also includes the last home of László Beke, the apartment block at 51 Király Street in Budapest’s 7th District, designed by the architect Jenő Schwarz (1864–1943) as his own rental property, which contained his own studio. The facades of this block and the stairwell vestibule are decorated with imaginary depictions of the biblical King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, which allude to the architect’s links with the freemasons.
