Abstract

This study attempts to prove that the Chagatai-Latin dictionary Vocabularium Linguae Giagataicae sive Igureae ( Lexico Ćiagataico ), whose author is unknown and which is kept in the Islamic Manuscripts Collection of the Leipzig University Library under the archive number Vollers 1406-1, was written by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall in Paris in 1810. The study also points to the influence of this dictionary on Zenker’s Türkisch-Arabisch-Persisches Handwörterbuch . The transcription system, sources and terminology used in the Lexico Ćiagataico indicate that this dictionary was written by Hammer, and considering some of the information Hammer wrote in his memoirs, there is no doubt that this work belongs to him. With the discovery that this dictionary belongs to Hammer, it is clear that he was one of the pioneering European Orientalists not only in the field of Ottoman history and literature, but also in the field of Chagatai studies. Although the Lexico Ćiagataico does not contain any linguistically significant data, it is of great historical importance as one of the first Chagatai studies in Europe.
