Abstract
The article briefly reviews the history of modern censuses in Hungary, focusing primarily on methodological issues related to the collection of ethnic data. I hope that this will provide a more nuanced view of the ethno-demographic processes in Central Europe (and in the Carpathian Basin) and their impact on the present. At the same time, it is important to know that these topics are becoming increasingly relevant because nowadays register-based censuses tend to be more widespread not only in Europe but also in other parts of the world, which, among other things, make it almost impossible to collect sensitive data such as nationality or ethnic and religious affiliation.
