Abstract

The study reviews the main socio-demographic data of the nationalities in Hungary based on the 2022 census and attempts to place the nationality groups in the social space. On the one hand, the analysis seeks to answer the question of whether individual nationalities have any striking social characteristics compared to the national averages. On the other hand, by comparing nationalities with each other, we attempt to identify clusters of ethnic groups with specific characteristics and explore the main features of their social stratification. Based on our analysis, we have concluded that the size of ethnic groups is a convincing organizing principle, as this proportionality also represents specific ethnic social strata. Accordingly, ethnic groups are not only organized into four social strata in proportion to their size, but this division also follows specific social patterns in terms of education and the labour market.
