Alleviating effect of Bifidobacterium longum BL300 on β-lactoglobulin-induced food allergy in young mice

Abstract

Food allergies rank fifth among public health issues worldwide, the number of individuals with food allergies has increased in China. Recent studies have demonstrated a mitigating effect of probiotics on food allergies. The study aimed to explore the alleviating effects of Bifidobacterium longum BL300 on inflammation in a β -lactoglobulin-induced food allergy in mice. The symptoms of mice with allergies were evaluated by observing allergic manifestations. The expression of various biochemical indicators in mouse serum was detected. The results indicated that B. longum BL300 alleviated food allergy symptoms induced by β -lactoglobulin in young mice, reducing thymus swelling and decreasing spleen atrophy. B. longum BL300 reduced the levels of IgE, IgM, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17A, and TNF-α. After treatment with high-dose B. longum BL300, IgE and IL-13 decreased by 51.88 and 46.04%, respectively. The serum level of IFN-γ and TGF-β increased 1.65-fold and 1.76-fold, respectively. B. longum BL300 also promoted the secretion of Th1 cell-related cytokines and inhibited the secretion of Th2 cell-related cytokines. After treatment with B. longum BL300, the inflammatory conditions in the colon and jejunum were largely alleviated. B. longum BL300 also restored intestinal mucosal integrity, which alleviated the pathological reactions associated with food allergies.
