Abstract

Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971) amerikai teológust és politikai gondolkodót a nemzetközi kapcsolatok elmélete – Edward H. Carr-ral és Hans Morgenthauval együtt – a klasszikus realizmus egyik fő képviselőjének tekinti. Így nem meglepő, hogy Niebuhr 1940-estől 1960-as évekig tartó érett (keresztény) realizmusáról számos tudományos munka született már. Jelen tanulmány – e szokásos megközelítéssel ellentétben – Niebuhr nemzetközi kapcsolatokat érintő realizmusának kialakulását, fejlődési folyamatát mutatja be. Ehhez az első világháborús alapállásán túl a Moral Man and Immoral Society című könyvében érzékelhető realista fordulatot, valamint az 1930-as évek teológiai elmélyülésének főbb eredményeit mutatja be. Röviden, a tanulmány arra keresi a választ, hogy Niebuhr hogyan jutott el oda, hogy George Kennan „mindannyiunk atyja”-ként utalhasson rá. I American theologian and political thinker Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971) – together with Edward H. Carr and Hans Morgenthau – is considered one of the leading representatives of classical realism in international relations theory. Therefore, it is unsurprising that numerous academic works have been published on Niebuhr’s mature (Christian) realism that lasted from the 1940s to the 1960s. In contrast to this usual approach, the study presents the formation and development of Niebuhr’s realism in international relations. For this, in addition to his position during World War I, the realist turn in Moral Man and Immoral Society, and the main results of his theological deepening of the 1930s will be presented. In short, the study seeks to answer how Niebuhr arrived at the point where George Kennan could refer to him as “the father of us all”.
